Where the pictures come from — and how to have one removed.
Anecdote is a free, non-commercial study reference. It shows photographs of designed objects, buildings, artworks and their makers so that the works being written about can be identified and studied. This page explains the sourcing policy and gives rights holders a fast, guaranteed route to removal.
How images are used
- Images illustrate editorial, educational commentary — every picture accompanies an original written entry about the work or its maker. Nothing on this site is sold, and the images are not offered for download or reuse.
- Attribution travels with the image: wherever a work is shown full-size, a “Source ↗” link points to the page the image came from.
- Most images are displayed from their original locations; small technical thumbnails (max 512px) are generated for the graph view only.
- The project is moving its catalogue toward open-access sources — museums that publish their collections for exactly this kind of use (public-domain / CC0 programmes at institutions like the Metropolitan Museum, Rijksmuseum and Art Institute of Chicago).
Are you a rights holder?
If you own the rights to an image shown here and would like it credited differently or removed, one email is enough.
- Write to mmeier0127@gmail.com with a link to the page and the image concerned.
- State that you're the rights holder (or act for them) — no formal legal notice needed.
- The image will be removed or re-credited within 7 days, normally much faster. No arguments, no forms.
Written content & research
All entry texts, taglines and curation are original writing, edited and directed by the site's operator. The connection research — the sourced facts linking people, works and movements throughout the dictionary — was carried out with Claude (Anthropic's AI), which also helped build the site itself; every researched fact was checked against, and cites, a named source inline (museum archives, foundations, monographs, reference works). Short quotations from designers and artists appear with attribution under quotation right / fair use for the purpose of commentary.
